Alfalfa is a complementary crop that favors water penetration and retention and fixes nitrogen.

Alfalfa (Medicago sativa) belongs to the legume family, perennial and deep-rooted. Used since ancient times by humans, it continues to be a very important part of animal feed because of its great nutritional value. Alfalfa is rich in minerals and essential vitamins, including vitamins B, A, D, E, K and biotin.

Alfalfa is a phenomenal crop for cannabis because it fixes nitrogen and stores iron, magnesium, potassium and phosphorus. Its deep roots help it break up the substrate, increasing water penetration and retention and slowing evaporation. The tea made from its dried stems is a very effective restorative for promoting the growth of other plants, including marijuana.

Alfalfa repels the dreaded Lygus bug, while attracting beneficial insects to your crop, such as ladybugs, assassin beetles and various predatory wasps. Stems should be pruned frequently as this plant could reach a meter in height. It makes an ideal green manure or mineral-rich addition to any compost.
